Pirmazra

Pirmazra was a village in the Zangezur uezd of the former Yelizavetpol (Ganja) governorate, in the former Gafan distict, and currently in the Syunik province. It was located at a distance of 35 km from the town of Gafan. After the establishment of the Zangezur uezd in Soviet Armenia on 31 August 1921, the village was integrated into the administrative area of Armenia.

The village was previously inhabited by the Azerbaijanis, who gradually left the village after the Armenians had been settled in the region. The toponym was coined by combining the words “pir” meaning “a shrine” and “mazra” meaning “a field” in Arabic.

The toponym means “the village near the shrine situated in the field”. The village was renamed “Katnarat” by the the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR dated 29 June 1949. At present, the village is abolished.
