Pirmalak is a village in the Echmiadzin uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Talin district, and currently in the Aragatsotn province. The provincial centre lies 54 km to the southwest of the town of Ashtarak, at a height of 1,540 m above sea level. It is marked on the five-verst map of the Caucasus.
The village was inhabited by 91 Azerbaijanis in 1873, 329 in 1897, 164 in 1908, 176 in 1914, 404 in 1916, 261 in January 1918. In 1918 the Azerbaijanis, having been exposed to the aggression of Armenian armed groups, were deported from their historical-ethnic lands or massacred. Since 1918 only Armenians have been residing there.
The toponym was coined from the word “Pir” denoting a religious notion (in English: a sanctuary) and the personal name “Melek”.
By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR dated 3 January 1935, the village was renamed “Areg” and by decision of the Armenian Parliament dated 4 April 2006, it was renamed “Tatul”. According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it is included in the administrative area of the Aragatsotn province.
