Pashali is a village in the Sharur-Daralayaz uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Pashali (Azizbeyov, Vayk) district, and currently in the Vayots Dzor province. The provincial centre lies 27 km to the southeast of the town of Keshishkend, near the Pashali and Yaziyurd rivers, the left tributaries of the Arpa River, at a height of 1,570 m above sea level. Its name was marked in “The Iravan Province Review Book” compiled in 1728 and on the five-verst map of the Caucasus.
Along with the Armenians, the village was inhabited by 39 Azerbaijanis in 1897 and five Azerbaijanis in 1926. In the 1930s the Azerbaijanis were expelled from the village. At present, the village is inhabited by Armenians.
The toponym was formed on the basis of the multi-generational family name “Pashali”.
By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR dated 3 January 1935, it was renamed Azizbeyov, and by decision of 8 July 1957, it was renamed “Zaritap”. According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative area of the Vayots Dzor province.
