Ortakend is a village in the Sharur-Daralayaz uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Keshishkend (Yeghegnadzor) district, and currently in the Vayots Dzor province. The provincial centre lies 4 km to the northeast of the town of Keshishkend, on the banks of the Bashkendchay, the right tributary of the Arpachay, at a height of 1,350 m above sea level.
Until 1828 the village had been inhabited only by Azerbaijanis. The Armenians from provinces of Khoy and Salmas of Iran were moved and settled there in 1828–1830. Along with the Armenians, the village was inhabited by 17 Azerbaijanis in 1897 and three Azerbaijanis in 1926. In 1929 the Azerbaijanis were forced out of the village. At present, the only residents of the village are Armenians.
The toponym is formed by combining the word “orta”, which means “between two objects” in Azerbaijani, and the word “ kend”, which means “a settlement”.
By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR dated 10 September 1946, the village was renamed “Gladzor”. According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative area of the Vayots Dzor province.
