Novur

Novur is a village in the Gazakh uezd of the former Yelizavetpol (Ganja) governorate, later in the former Shamshaddin (Berd) district, and currently in the Tavush province. The provincial centre lies 43 km to the southwest of the town of Karavansara (Ijevan), at a height of 1,490 m above sea level.

The village was originally inhabited by Azerbaijanis, and after the settlement of Armenians in the region, the population gradually left the village. The name of the village is mentioned in sources as “Navur”, “Novchali”, “Nevur”.

The toponym was coined on the basis of the word “nohur” which means “pond” in the Azerbaijani language.

Currently, the name of the settlement is written as “Navur” in official documents in Armenian. According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia”, dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative area of the Tavush province.
