Moz

Moz was a village in the territory of the Sharur-Daralayaz uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Keshishkend (Yeghegnadzor) district, and present-day Vayots Dzor province. It was located along the south tributary of the Arpachay, on the road from Keshishkend to Soylan and Istisu. The village was noted as “Mor” in “The Iravan Province Review Book” compiled in 1728. There was a “r~z” alteration in the toponym which is typical to the Azerbaijani language . The village was mentioned as “Mozrov” in Armenian sources.

The village was solely inhabited by Azerbaijanis – 80 in 1873, 86 in 1886, 145 in 1897, 161 in 1904, 177 in 1914 and 150 Azerbaijanis in 1916. The Azerbaijanis were attacked, massacred or ousted from the village by Armenian armed formations in 1918. The village was abolished in 1920. At present, it lies in ruins.

The toponym was coined on the basis of the word “moz” meaning in Old Turkic “white, whitish, gray or grayish”.
