Mazra

Mazra is a village in the Zangezur uezd of the former Yelizavetpol (Ganja) governorate, later in the former Garakilsa (Sisian) district, and currently in the Syunik province. The provincial centre lies 57 km to the north of the town of Gafan, at a height of 1,500 m above sea level. Following the establishment of the Zangezur uezd in Soviet Armenia on 31 August 1921, the settlement was integrated into the administrative area of Armenia. It is marked in “The Iravan Province Comprehensive Data Book” dated 1590, on the five-verst map of the Caucasus.

Until 1828 the village had been inhabited by Azerbaijanis. The Armenians from the Khoy and Salmas provinces of Iran were settled there in 1828–1829.

The toponym was coined on the basis of the Persian word “mazra”, which implies “a tillage”.

By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR dated 10 September 1946, the village was renamed “Barsravan”. According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative area of the Syunik province.
