Maldash

Maldash is a village in the Zangezur uezd of the former Yelizavetpol (Ganja) governorate, later in the former Gorus district, and currently in the Syunik province. The provincial centre lies 43 km to the north of the town of Gapan, at a height of 1,850 m above sea level.

The village was originally inhabited by Azerbaijanis, and following the settlement of Armenians in the area, the inhabitants gradually left the village. Following the establishment of the Zangezur uezd in Soviet Armenia on 31 August 1921, the settlement was integrated into the administrative territory of Armenia.

The toponym was coined by combining the word “mal” used in the Azerbaijani language to mean “cattle, livestock, herd” and the word “dash” used in the Azerbaijani language to mean “a mountain, rock”.

By the decree of the President of the Republic of Armenia dated 12 June 1992, the name of the village was changed to “Kashuni”. According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative territory of the Syunik province.
