Maj

Maj was a village in the territory of the Zangezur uezd of the former Yelizavetpol (Ganja) governorate, later in the former Gorus district, and currently in the Syunik province. The village was integrated to the administrative territory of Armenia after the establishment of the Zangezur uezd in Soviet Armenia on 31 August 1921.

The village was solely inhabited by Azerbaijanis: 55 in 1897, 87 in 1904, 458 in 1914. The Azerbaijanis were attacked, massacred or expelled from the village by Armenian armed formations in 1918. Following all this, the village was settled by Armenians.

The toponym was coined on the basis of the root of the words “mazhalik”, “mezhe” “maj” meaning in Turkic “a hill”. The village was merged with the Armenian village of Yerisatumb and abolished in the 1930s.
