Leylikochan

Leylikochan or Leyligachan was a village in the Sharur-Daralayaz uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Pashali (Azizbeyov, Vayk) district, and present-day Vayots Dzor province. It was located near the Kochbakchay, the right tributary of the Julchay. The name of the village was noted as “Leyligachan” in Armenian sources. It was marked on the five-verst map of the Caucasus.

The village was solely inhabited by Azerbaijanis: 139 in 1873, 153 in 1886, 352 in 1897, 384 in 1904, 422 in 1914 and 420 Azerbaijanis in 1916. The Azerbaijanis were attacked, massacred or expelled from the village by Armenian armed units in 1918. The village was abolished in 1920. At present, it lies in ruins.

The toponym was coined by combining the personal name “Leyli” and the participle “kochan” meaning “the place where Leyli settled down”.
