Lalakend is a village in the Gazakh uezd of the Yelizavetpol governorate, later in the former Karvansara (Ijevan) district, and currently in the Tavush province. The provincial centre lies 20 km to the northeast of the town of Karvansara, at a height of 750 m above sea level.
The village was originally inhabited by Azerbaijanis, and following the settlement of Armenians in the area, the inhabitants gradually left the village.
The toponym was coined by combining the word “kend” used in Old Turkic to mean “a settlement” and the word “lala” meaning “a great mentor”.
By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR dated 25 January 1978, the village was renamed “Vazashen”. According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative area of the Tavush province.
