Kosamammad

Kosamammad is a village in the Novo-Bayazid uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Kavar (Yeni Bayazid, Kamo) district, and currently in the Gegharkunik province. The provincial centre lies 3 km to the southeast of the town of Kavar, on the banks of the Kavar River, at a height of 1,980 m above sea level. It was marked on the five-verst map of the Caucasus. Another name for the village was “Ashaghi Ganzak”. The name of the village was marked as “Kanizak” in “The Iravan Province Review Book”.

In 1897, along with the Armenians, the village was inhabited by 16 Azerbaijanis. In 1905–1906 the Azerbaijanis were deported by Armenian militants. The village is currently inhabited only by Armenians.

The toponym was coined on the basis of the nickname “kosa” and the personal name “Mammad”. The name of the village was changed to “Batikyan” in 1924.

By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR dated 8 August 1991, the village was renamed “Ganzak”. According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative territory of the Gegharkunik province.
