Kirs is a village in the Zangezur uezd of the former Yelizavetpol (Ganja) governorate, later in the former Gafan district, and currently in the Syunik province. It lies 2 km from the village of Kurud, at a height of 2,100 m above sea level. Following the establishment of the Zangezur uezd in Soviet Armenia on 31 August 1921, the settlement was integrated into the administrative area of Armenia.
The village was inhabited by Azerbaijanis: 130 in 1886 and 56 Azerbaijanis in 1897. In 1905–1906, the Azerbaijanis were massacred or deported by Armenians. Following the establishment of Soviet power in present-day Armenia, the villagers managed to return to their homes. The village was inhabited by Azerbaijanis: 78 in 1922, 77 in 1926, 104 in 1931, 131 in 1939, 220 in 1959, 299 in 1970 and 314 Azerbaijanis in 1979. In November 1988 the Azerbaijanis were expelled from their historical and ethnic lands by the Armenian government. Currently, there is no housing in the village.
The toponym was coined on the basis of the word “kir”(kir – author) used in the Turkish language to mean “a steppe, border, plateau, mountain”. The “s” at the end of the toponym is a topo-formant. The name of the village corresponds to the relief where it is located. Thus, the village is located at the foot of a mountain, in a meadow.
By decision of the Armenian Parliament dated 4 July 2006, the name of the village was changed to “Kisk”. According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative area of the Syunik province.
