Kilsakend

Kilsakend is a village in the Zangezur uezd of the former Yelizavetpol (Ganja) governorate, later in the former Gafan district, and currently in the Syunik province. The provincial centre lies 27 km to the southwest of Gapan, at a height of 1,025 m above sea level. It was marked on the five-verst map of the Caucasus. Following the establishment of the Zangezur uezd in Soviet Armenia on 31 August 1921, the settlement was integrated into the administrative area of Armenia.

The village was originally inhabited by Azerbaijanis, but following the settlement of the Armenians in the area, the population gradually left the village.

The toponym was coined by combining the word “kilsa” used in the Azerbaijani language to mean “a religious temple” and the word “kend” used to mean “a settlement”, and means “a village built adjacent to a church”.

In 1924, the village was renamed “Srashen”. According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative area of the Syunik province.
