Kichik Vedi

Kichik Vedi is a village in the Iravan uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Vedi (Ararat) district, and currently in the Ararat province. The provincial centre lies 7 km to the southeast of the town of Gamarli (Artashat), at a height of 825 m above sea level. It was marked in “The Iravan Province Review Book”, and on the five-verst map of the Caucasus.

The village was inhabited by Azerbaijanis, 166 in 1831, 639 in 1873, 599 in 1886, 971 in 1897, 960 in 1904, 1,056 in 1914 and 1,034 Azerbaijanis in 1916. In 1918 the Azerbaijanis were expelled by Armenian armed forces, and in 1918–1919 the Armenians relocated from the Shatakh and Bolu provinces of Türkiye were settled in the village. Following the establishment of Soviet power in the territory of present-day Armenia, the Azerbaijanis managed to return to their native village. The village was inhabited by 286 Azerbaijanis and 193 Armenians in 1922, 256 Azerbaijanis, 256 Armenians and 15 Kurds in 1926, and 373 Azerbaijanis and 295 Armenians in 1931. The Azerbaijanis were gradually expelled from their historical and ethnic lands in 1948–1953 and in November 1988. Currently, the village is inhabited only by Armenians.

The toponym was coined by combining the word “kichik” (small), which denotes a sign of distinctiveness, and the Arabic word “vadi”, which implies “a field, desert”, “space, place”.

The name of the village is literally translated into the Armenian as “Pokr Vedi”. According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative territory of the Ararat province.
