Kichik Kapanak

Kichik Kapanak is a village in the Alexandropol uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Duzkend (Akhuryan) district, and currently in the Shirak province. The provincial centre lies 13 km to the southeast of the town of Gumru, at a height of 1,670 m above sea level. It was marked on the five-verst map of the Caucasus. Until 1937 it had been within the former Gumru (Leninakan) district.

According to the treaties of Turkmenchay (1828) and Adrianople (1829), following the settlement of Armenians in the village, the Azerbaijanis living there moved to Türkiye.

The toponym was coined from the ethnonym “Kapanakchi” derived from the word “kapanak” used in Old Turkic to mean “a shepherd’s outer garment” (the suffix “-chi” in the ethnonym was abbreviated when the toponym was created). “Kichik” (small) means a distinctive feature.

By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR dated 7 December 1945, the village was renamed “Hovit”. According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative territory of the Shirak province.
