Kichik Garakilsa is a village in the Alexandropol uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Duzkend (Akhuryan) district, and currently in the Shirak province. The provincial centre lies 8 km to the south of the town of Gumru, at a height of 1,490 m above sea level. The name of the village was marked as “Khilgarakilsa”, “Khli-Garakilsa”, and as “Kichik Garakilsa” on the five-verst map of the Caucasus.
The village had been inhabited by Azerbaijanis until 1828. The Armenians relocated from the Kars and Alashkirt provinces of Türkiye in 1829–1830 were settled in the village. Currently, only Armenians live there.
The toponym was coined from the name of a black church-temple adjacent to the village. The word “kichik” (small) at the beginning of the toponym means a feature of distinctiveness.
By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR dated 7 December 1945, the village was renamed “Azatan”. According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative territory of the Shirak province.
