Kichik Garagoyunlu was a village in the territory of the Novo-Bayazid uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Basarkechar (Vardenis) district, and present-day Gegharkunik province. It was located 14 km to the southwest of the settlement of Basarkechar (Vardenis).
The village was inhabited by 235 Azerbaijanis in 1897, 253 in 1908, 328 in 1914 and 301 Azerbaijanis in 1916. The Azerbaijanis were attacked, massacred or ousted from the village by Armenian armed formations in April 1919. After the establishment of Soviet power in present-day Armenia, the Azerbaijanis managed to return to their village. The village was inhabited by 197 Azerbaijanis in 1922, 212 in 1926 and 209 in 1931. The village was abolished after being merged with the village of Boyuk Garagoyunlu.
The toponym was coined on the basis of the Turkic ethnonym “Garagoyunlu”.
