Khaznavar

Khaznavar or Khoznavar is a village in the Zangezur uezd of the former Yelizavetpol (Ganja) governorate, later in the former Gorus district, and currently in the Syunik province. The provincial centre lies 90 km to the northeast of the Gapan town, at a height of 1,600 m above sea level. The ancient name of the village was Khaznavar, Khandzaberd. Following the establishment of the Zangezur uezd in Soviet Armenia on 31 August 1921, the settlement was integrated into the administrative territory of Armenia.

Until 1828 the village had been inhabited only by Azerbaijanis. After the Treaty of Turkmenchay (1828), the Armenians relocated from abroad were settled in the village. Along with the Armenians, the village was inhabited by 28 Azerbaijanis in 1831, 86 Azerbaijanis in 1873, and 180 Azerbaijanis in 1897. In 1918 the Azerbaijanis residing in the village were massacred or expelled being exposed to aggression by Armenian militants. After 1918 it has been inhabited only by Armenians.

Based on the original, ancient form of the toponym (Khaznavar/Khandaberd), we conclude that the name of the village was coined by combining the ethnonym “Genjak” (Khazna, Khandza), one of the ancient Turkic tribes, and the Azerbaijani word “var” meaning “a fortified village”, “a fortress”. It is an ethnotoponym. It is a toponym with a complex structure.

According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative territory of the Syunik province.
