Khartlig was a village in territory of the Novo-Bayazid uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Garanlig (Martuni) district, and present-day Gegharkunik province. The village was located near the village of Garanlig and the Garanlig River and at the foot of Shalibulag Mountain. The village was marked on the five-verst map of the Caucasus.

The village was inhabited by 144 Azerbaijanis in 1873, 162 in 1886, 190 in 1897, 282 in 1914 and 269 Azerbaijanis in 1916. The Azerbaijanis were attacked, massacred or ousted from the village by Armenian armed units in 1918. The village was reduced to ruins in 1930. At present, it lies in ruins.

The toponym was coined by adding the suffix “-lig” to the Turkic word “gart” meaning “old, elderly, tall, high”.
