Khanazakh is a village in the Zangezur uezd of the former Yelizavetpol (Ganja) governorate, later in the former Gorus district, and currently in the Syunik province. It is located at a distance of 37 km from the town of Gorus. Following the establishment of the Zangezur uezd in Soviet Armenia on 31 August 1921, the settlement was integrated into the administrative territory of Armenia.
Along with the Armenians, the village was inhabited by 22 Azerbaijanis in 1831 and 200 Azerbaijanis in 1873. In 1877–1878 the Azerbaijanis were expelled from the village. At present, only Armenians live there.
The toponym was coined on the basis of the word “khana” of Persian origin meaning “home”, “a village” and “a place of residence” in Turkic.
According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative territory of the Syunik province.
