Keypashin

Keypashin is a village in the Zangezur uezd of the former Yelizavetpol (Ganja) governorate, later in the former Gafan district, the territory of present Syunik province. It lies 38 km to the northeast of Gafan, in the upper reaches of the Gighi River, at the confluence of the Gard River and the Gighi River. Following the establishment of the Zangezur uezd in Soviet Armenia on 31 August 1921, the settlement was integrated into the administrative area of Armenia. When the kolkhoz structure was established in 1930, it was subordinated to the Pahyan farm, and after the abolition of the kolkhozes in the 1950s, it was subordinated to the Gighi livestock state farm.

The village was inhabited by 68 Azerbaijanis in 1897, 85 in 1922, 45 in 1926, 136 in 1931 and 1,372 Azerbaijanis in 1959. In late November 1988 the Azerbaijanis were deported from their historical and ethnic lands. At present, the village is inhabited by Armenians.

The toponym was coined by combining the topoformant “shen”, which is a phonetic form of the word “shenlik” meaning “a settlement” in Turkish and the word “kap” used in the Azerbaijani language meaning “a stepped rock”. The village is currently integrated into the Nor Astghaberd village community of the Syunik central administrative- territorial unit of the Republic of Armenia. Except a few houses, no housing exists in the village, it has been destroyed.
