Karvansara

Karvansara district was established on September 9, 1930. The administrative center of the district with an area of 1336 km² was the city of Karvansara, which was subordinated to the republic. The distance from the district center to the city of Iravan is 142 km.

The territory of the district was historically included in the Shamshaddil district of the Iravan Khanate, and during the period of Tsarist Russia, it was included in the Gazakh district of the Yelizavetpol (Ganja) governorate.

The territory of Karvansara district also included a part of Garagoyunlu valley. It was surrounded by Pambak, Murghuz, Aleppo and Karvansara mountain ranges. Agstafa river (Kur basin) flows through the region.

On March 19, 1951, the villages of the abolished Dilijan district were given to the jurisdiction of Karvansara district.

Since 1987, the native inhabitants of the district – Azerbaijanis were forced to leave their places of residence. In 1995, the district was abolished and included in the administrative territory of Tavush province of Armenia.
