Karvansara

Karvansara is a village in the Echmiadzin uezd of the former Iravan governorate, and currently in the Aragatsotn province. The village was a part of Abaran and Artik districts in different periods. By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR dated March 15, 1972, it was transferred to the Alagoz (Araqats) district. The provincial centre lies 51 km to the northwest of the town of Ashtarak, to the southern side of Alagoz Mountain, at a height of 2,100 m above sea level. After the Russo-Turkish war of 1877–1878, the Azerbaijani residents of the village were expelled, and Yezidi Kurds and Armenians were settled in the village.

The toponym was coined by combining the word “karvan” (a caravan) and the word “saray” (a palace) used in Turkish to mean “a house”, “a farm building”, and means “a village built next to a building with a large yard for temporary accommodation of passengers, travelers and caravans from other places and storage of vehicles.”

By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR dated 25 January 1978, the village was renamed “Amre Taza”, and by the decree of the President of the Republic of Armenia dated 4 July 2006, it was renamed “Satunts”. According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative area of the Aragatsotn province.
