Karpijli is a village in the Iravan uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Ellar (Kotayk, Abovyan) district, and currently in the Kotayk province. The provincial centre lies 54 km to the southwest of the town of Akhta (Hrazdan), 11 km to the east of the city of Iravan, at a height of 1,880 m above sea level.

The village was solely inhabited by Azerbaijanis: 141 in 1873, 172 in 1886, 250 in 1897, 188 in 1904, 316 in 1914 and 307 Azerbaijanis in 1916. In 1918 the Azerbaijanis were exposed to genocide by Armenian armed forces and deported, and in 1928–1930 the Armenians removed from Türkiye were settled in the village. The surviving Azerbaijani villagers managed to return to their homeland following the establishment of Soviet power in present-day Armenia. Along with the Armenians, the village was inhabited by 36 Azerbaijanis in 1922. In 1924–1925 the villagers were again expelled from their native lands. Currently, the village is inhabited only by Armenians.

The name of the settlement is based on the name of the tribe “Karpijli”. By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR dated 3 January 1935, the village was renamed “Geghadir”. According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative territory of the Kotayk province.
