Jrvezh is a village in the former Ellar (Kotayk, Abovyan) district in the Iravan uezd of the former Iravan governorate, and currently in the Kotayk province. The provincial centre lies 48 km to the north-west of the town of Akhta (Hrazdan), and at a height of 1,100 m above sea level. It was presented as “Jevrish” in “The Iravan Province Comprehensive Book” compiled in 1590. In their works the Armenian authors state that the ancient name of the village was “Chivresh”.
Historically, only Azerbaijanis lived in the village. Armenians were settled there in 1828–1829 having been removed from the Iranian provinces of Khoy and Salmas. Along with the Armenians, the village was inhabited also by 43 Azerbaijanis in 1873, 31 in 1886 and 58 Azerbaijanis in 1897. In 1918 the Azerbaijanis in the village were deported having been exposed to aggression of Armenians. At present, Armenians live there.
According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative area of the Kotayk province.
