Ingala

Ingala was a village in the territory of the Iravan uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Vedi (Ararat) district, and present-day Ararat province. It was located 22-24 km to the northeast of the settlement of Boyuk Vedi (Ararat) and on the left bank of the Vedi River.

The village was inhabited by 113 Azerbaijanis in 1886, 124 in 1897 and 161 Azerbaijanis in 1916. In 1918–1919 the Azerbaijanis were massacred by Armenian armed units or had to leave the village and seek refuge in the Iranian territory. After the establishment of Soviet power in present-day Armenia, the Azerbaijanis who survived managed to return to the village. The village was inhabited by 30 Azerbaijanis in 1926, 33 in 1931 and 127 in 1939. In accordance with the decision of the USSR Council of Ministers “On the resettlement of collective farmers and other Azerbaijani population from Armenian SSR to the Kur-Araz lowlands of the Azerbaijan SSR” dated 23 December 1947, the Azerbaijani population of the village was forcibly deported to Azerbaijan. Later, the village was abolished. At present, it lies in ruins.

The toponym was coined by combining the words “in” meaning in Old Turkic “a hut, a cave” and “gala”.
