Imanshahli is a village in the Iravan uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Gamarli (Artashat) district, and currently in the Ararat province. The provincial centre is located 7 km to the northwest of the town of Gamarli, to the south of Iravan, adjacent to the canal flowing from the Garni River, at a height of 845 m above sea level. Another name for the village was “Imanshali”. It was marked as “Imanshahli” in “The Iravan Province Review Book”, as “Imanshalu” on the five-verst map of the Caucasus.
Historically, it was solely inhabited by Azerbaijanis. Armenian sources indicate that the Imanshahli village was established in 1831. In fact, the historical truth is falsified. Thus, “Imanshahli village” was marked on the list of villages integrated into the Garni area in “The Iravan Province Review Book” compiled in 1728. In 1828- 1830 Armenians were relocated from Khoy and Salmas provinces of Iran and settled in the village. Along with the Armenians, it was inhabited by 31 Azerbaijanis in 1831, 17 in 1873, 12 in 1886, and six Azerbaijanis in 1897. In 1905–1906 the Azerbaijanis were deported by Armenian militants. At present, Armenians reside there.
The toponym was formed on the basis of the name “Imanshali/Imanshahli” multi-generational family, which implies “shah’s followers”.
By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR dated 3 January 1935, the name of the village was changed to “Mkhchyan”. According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative territory of the Ararat province.
