Hamamli district was established on December 31, 1937. The administrative center of the district with an area of 596 km² was the city of Hamamli. The distance from there to Iravan is 101 km.

The name of this settlement, founded in the 17th century, took its name from historical baths located in this area. The name of the village is related to the important hot water mineral springs, which were called “Hamamlı”.
By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR dated October 26, 1949, the name of the district was changed to “Spitak”.
Since 1987, the native inhabitants of the district – Azerbaijanis were forced to leave their places of residence. In 1995, the district was abolished and included in the administrative territory of Lori province of Armenia.
