Haggikhli

Haggikhli is a village in the Gazakh uezd of the former Yelizavetpol (Ganja) governorate, later in the former Karvansara (Ijevan) district, and currently in the Tavush province. The provincial centre is located 11 km to the northeast of the town Karvansara, at a height of 1,750 m above sea level. Until the end of 1930 it had been subordinated to the Dilijan district.

The village was inhabited by 188 Azerbaijanis in 1873, 372 in 1897, 347 in 1904, 450 in 1916 and 121 Azerbaijanis in 1919. In March 1919 the Azerbaijanis, the main inhabitants of the village, were attacked by Armenian armed forces and deported. The surviving Haggikhli inhabitants managed to return to their village following the establishment of Soviet power in present-day Armenia. The village was inhabited by 306 Azerbaijanis in 1922, 331 in 1926, 412 in 1931, 578 in 1939, 707 in 1959, 869 in 1970 and 748 Azerbaijanis in 1979. In late November 1988, Armenians attacked the village and deported its residents. At present, Armenians live there.

The toponym was coined on the basis of the Turkic ethnonym “Haggikhli”.

By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR dated 25 January 1978, the village was renamed “Vurghun” (in honor of the Azerbaijani poet S. Vurghun), and by decision dated 3 April 1991, it was renamed “Hovk”. According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative area of the Tavush province.
