Gurjuyolu

Gurjuyolu is a village in the Alexandropol uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Gizil Goch (Gukasyan) district, in the present territory of the Shirak province. The provincial centre is located 21 km to the north of the town of Gumru, at a height of 1,950 m above sea level.

The village was initially inhabited by Azerbaijanis who moved to Türkiye following the settlement of Armenians in the region. Until 1937, it had been subordinated to the former Aghbaba district. Armenian authors mention it as “Gurjuyel” in their works, and it was marked as “Gurjuel” on the five-verst map of the Caucasus.

The toponym was coined by combining the ethnonym “Gürcü” (Georgian) and the Azerbaijani word “yol” (a road, way). The village is located on the highway from Gumru to Georgia.

The village was renamed “Torosgyugh” on 30 July 1980. According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative territory of the Shirak province.
