Gurdugulu is a village in the Echmiadzin uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Gurdugulu (Hoktemberyan) district, and currently in the Armavir province. The provincial centre lies 9 km to the south of the town of Serdarabad (Hoktemberyan, Armavir), at the foot of Alagoz Mountain, 6-8 km to the south of the district centre, at a height of 855 m above sea level. It used to be the centre of the Gurdugulu district, later the Hoktemberyan district, and currently, it is the centre of the Armavir province.

The village was originally inhabited by Azerbaijanis, and following the settlement of Armenians in the area, the local inhabitants gradually left the village.

The toponym was coined by combining the Turkic ethnonym “Gurd” and the personal name “Gulu”, and means “a village built by Gulu from the Gurd tribe”.

By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR dated 3 January 1935, the village was renamed “Armavir”. According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative area of the Armavir province.
