Guney

Guney is a village in the Gazakh uezd of the former Yelizavetpol (Ganja) governorate, later in the former Karvansara (Ijevan) district, and currently in the Tavush province. The provincial centre is located 24 km to the northwest of the town of Karvansara, at a height of 720 m above sea level.

The village was initially inhabited by Azerbaijanis who gradually left it following the settlement of Armenians in the village.

The toponym is based on the Azerbaijani word “guney” meaning “south, a sunny place”.

The village was renamed “Getashen” by the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR dated 3 January 1935 and then “Kirants” by decision dated 25 May 1967. According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative area of the Tavush province).
