Gulali is a village in the Gazakh uezd of the former Yelizavetpol (Ganja) governorate, later in the former Shamshaddin (Berd) district, and currently in the Tavush province. The provincial centre lies 75 km to the southeast of the town of Karvansara (Ijevan), at a height of 910 m above sea level. It is marked on the five-verst map of the Caucasus.
Along with the Armenians, the village was inhabited by five Azerbaijanis in 1926. In 1930 the Azerbaijanis were forced out of the village by Armenians. Currently, the village is inhabited only by Armenians.
The toponym was coined by combining the Kipchak Turkic tribe ethnonym “Gul” and the personal name “Ali”, and means “a village belonging to Ali from the Gul tribe”.
By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR dated 4 May 1939, the village was renamed “Haykedzor”. According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative area of the Tavush province.
