Gorus is a village in the Zangezur uezd of the former Yelizavetpol (Ganja) governorate, a town of the same name in the former Gorus district, and currently in the Syunik province. The provincial centre is located 69 km to the northeast of the town of Vanadzor (Boyuk Garakilsa), on the left bank of the Bazarchay River (Vorotan), at a height of 1,400 m above sea level. Following the establishment of the district of Zangezur in Soviet Armenia on 31 August 1921, the settlement was integrated into the administrative territory of Armenia. The district of Gorus was established in Zangezur on 9 September 1930. In their works Armenian authors state that Gorus was first mentioned in the 13th century. Armenian literature referred to it as “Gorus”, “Gerusi”, “Gorus”.
The village was inhabited by 228 Azerbaijanis in 1897, 51 Azerbaijanis in 1926, and 13 Azerbaijanis in 1931. The Azerbaijanis residing in the town of Gorus were completely deported by the Armenian government in the 1940s. Currently, it is inhabited only by Armenians.
The toponym “gorus” (goros, khoros) was formed on the basis of the Turkic ethnonym.
At present, the name of the settlement is specified as “Gorus” in official documents in the Armenian language. According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative territory of the Syunik province.
