Godakli was a village in the territory of the Echmiadzin uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Ashtarak district, and present-day Aragatsotn province, and located on the upper part of the Shahverdi River. The name of the village was noted as Kotakli in “The Iravan Province Review Book”.
The village was solely inhabited by Azerbaijanis: 80 in 1831, 79 in 1873, 133 in 1886, 204 in 1897, 242 in 1908, 258 in 1914, 237 in 1916 and 242 Azerbaijanis in 1918. The Azerbaijanis were attacked, massacred or ousted from the village by Armenian armed formations in 1918. Later, the village was abolished. At present, it lies in ruins.
The toponym was coined on the basis of the ethnonym “Godakli” of the Turkic Gazakhlar tribe.
