Gaygulu Jiftali

Gaygulu Jiftali is a village in the Alexandropol uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Gizil Goch (Gukasyan) district, and currently in the Shirak province. In their works Armenian authors referred to the village as “Jiftali”. The provincial centre lies 36 km to the north of the town of Gumru, at a height of 2,010 m above sea level. It was marked on the five-verst map of the Caucasus.

Following the settlement of Armenians in the area according to the Treaty of Adrianople (1829), the Azerbaijani population moved to Türkiye.

The toponym was coined by combining the Oghuz ethnonym “Gayi”, the personal name “Gulu”, and the word “jift” with the identifying suffix “-li”, used to mean “a place to breed cattle and sheep”, and means “a place to breed the cattle and sheep belonging to Gulu from the Gayi tribe”.

By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR dated 12 November 1946, the name of the village was changed to “Zuygakhpyur”. According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative area of the Shirak province.
