Gard

Gard is a village in the Zangezur uezd of the former Yelizavetpol (Ganja) governorate, later in the former Gafan district, and currently in the Syunik province. The provincial centre is located 33 km to the west of the town of Gapan, on the left bank of the Gard River, at a height of 1,900 m above sea level. Following the establishment of Zangezur uezd in Soviet Armenia on 31 August 1921, the settlement was integrated into the administrative area of Armenia. Armenian authors indicate the name of the village as “Gird”, “Kart”, “Karti”. There are 16th-17th-century Turkic historical monuments in the village. In 1918 Andranik’s army committed a massacre in the village, and the survivors fled to Ordubad. Following the establishment of Soviet power in Armenia, part of the population returned to their native lands.

The village was inhabited by 60 Azerbaijanis in 1897, 71 in 1922, 71 in 1926, 115 in 1931, 170 in 1939, 250 in 1959, 195 in 1970 and 61 Azerbaijanis in 1979. In 1988 all the residents of the village were deported from their historical and ethnic homeland by the Armenian state. Currently, the village is inhabited only by Armenians.

The toponym is based on the Persian word “kard”, which implies “plant beds”, “a planted field”. After the earthquake in 1968, the population was relocated to Zeyva village. By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR dated 3 April 1991, the village was renamed “Kard”.

According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative area of the Syunik province.
