Garatepe was a village in the territory of the Iravan uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Gamarli (Artashat) district, in the present Artashat province. It was located near the village of Aghhamzali (Marmarashen). The village was noted in “The Iravan Province Review Book” and marked on the five-verst map of the Caucasus.
The village was inhabited by 45 Azerbaijanis in 1831, 49 in 1873, 32 in 1897, 59 in 1908, 89 in 1914, 30 in 1916 and 38 Azerbaijanis in 1919. The village inhabitants were exposed to the attack of Armenian armed units and left the village in late 1919. Later, the village was abolished. At present, it lies in ruins.
The toponym was coined by combining the words “gara” meaning “big, wide, high, soaring” and “tepe” meaning “a hill” in Azerbaijani.
