Garakend

Garakend was a village in the territory of the Zangezur uezd of the former Yelizavetpol (Ganja) governorate, later in the former Gafan district, and present-day Syunik province. It was located 3 km to the east of the village of Shaharjik.

The village was initially inhabited by Azerbaijanis. After the Armenian settlement in the region, the Azerbaijanis gradually left the village which was abolished in the early 19th century. At present, it lies in ruins.

The toponym was coined by combining the words “gara” meaning “big” and the geographical nomen “kend”.
