Garahamzali is a village in the Iravan uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Gamarli (Artashat) district, and currently in the Ararat province. The provincial centre lies 4.5 km to the northwest of the town of Gamarli, at a height of 830 m above sea level. Another name for the village was “Tamamli”. It was marked on the five-verst map of the Caucasus.

Historically, the village was solely inhabited by Azerbaijanis. Armenians were settled in the village from Iran after 1828. Along with the Armenians, the village was inhabited by 55 Azerbaijanis in 1831, 192 in 1873, 247 in 1886 and 269 Azerbaijanis in 1897. In February 1918 the Azerbaijanis were deported having been exposed to the genocide committed by Armenian armed groups. Following the establishment of Soviet power in present-day Armenia, the surviving Azerbaijanis managed to return to their villages. The village was inhabited by 143 Azerbaijanis in 1922, 157 in 1926 and 167 Azerbaijanis in 1931. In accordance with the decision of the USSR Council of Ministers “On the resettlement of collective farmers and other Azerbaijani population from the Armenian SSR to the Kur-Araz lowland of the Azerbaijan SSR” dated 23 December 1947, the Azerbaijani population of the village was forcibly deported to Azerbaijan. Currently, the village is inhabited only by Armenians.

The toponym was formed on the basis of the name of the “Garahamzali” multi-generational family.

In 1920, the name of the village was changed to “Tamamli”, then to “Burastan”. According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative territory of the Ararat province.
