Garagala

Garagala is a village in the Borchali uezd of the former Tiflis governorate, later in the former Vorontsovka (Kalinino) district, and currently in the Lori province. It is located at a height of 1,710 m above sea level. The villages of Yukhari Garagala and Ashaghi Garagala were united in the 1930s and renamed “Garagala”. There are monuments, castles and cemeteries related to the history of medieval Azerbaijanis in the village.

The village was inhabited by 183 Azerbaijanis in 1886, 273 in 1897 and 244 Azerbaijanis in 1916. In 1918 the Azerbaijanis, the main inhabitants of the village, were deported by Armenian armed forces. Following the establishment of Soviet power in the territory of present-day Armenia, the deported Azerbaijanis managed to return to their village. The village was inhabited by 266 Azerbaijanis in 1922, 281 in 1926, 175 in 1931, 127 in 1939, 192 in 1959, 281 in 1970 and 240 Azerbaijanis in 1979. The residents of the village were expelled from their historical and ethnic lands in November-December 1988. Currently, the village is inhabited only by Armenians.

The toponym was coined by combining the word “gara” meaning color (black) and the word “gala” (a fortress), and means “a village next to a fortress built of black stone”.

By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR dated 3 April 1991, the village was renamed “Noramut”. According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative territory of the Lori province.
