Galakend was a village in the territory of the Sharur-Daralayaz uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Keshishkend (Yeghegnadzor) district, and present-day Vayots Dzor province. The village was listed as “Galabey” in “The Iravan Province Review Book” compiled in 1728. There were 40 gardens in the village in 1898. At present, the village is in ruins.
The toponym was coined by combining the words “gala” and “kend” to denote “a village near a fortress”.
