Galaderesi

Galaderesi is a village in the Zangezur uezd of the Yelizavetpol (Ganja) governorate, in the former Gorus district, and currently in the Syunik province. It lies 21 km to Gorus, at a height of 1,350 m above sea level. Following the establishment of the Zangezur uezd in Soviet Armenia on 31 August 1921, the settlement was integrated into the administrative territory of Armenia. It was marked on the five-verst map of the Caucasus.

The village was originally inhabited by Azerbaijanis, and following the settlement of Armenians in the region in accordance with the Treaty of Turkmenchay (1828), the population gradually left the village.

The toponym was coined by combining the Arabic word “gala”, which implies “a fortified place, town”, and the word “dere”, which implies “a long, deep valley between two mountains or hills, on the steppe” in Azerbaijani, and means “a village adjacent to the fortress located in the valley”.

The current village built on the territory of that village is now called “Halidzor”. According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative territory of the Syunik province.
