Duzkend

Duzkend is a village in the Alexandropol uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Talin district, and currently in the Aragatsotn province. The provincial centre lies 21 km to the southwest of the town of Ashtarak, at a height of 1,475 m above sea level. It was marked on the five-verst map of the Caucasus.

The village was initially inhabited by Azerbaijanis who moved to Türkiye after Armenians had been settled in the region.

The toponym was coined by combining the word “dyuz” used in Azerbaijani in the sense of “a plain, field, lowland” and the word “kend” used in Turkish in the sense of “a town, settlement”.

The village was renamed “Barozh” by the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR dated 3 January 1935, and further “Arevut” by decision of the Parliament of the Armenian Republic dated 4 July 2006. According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative area of the Aragatsotn province.
