Dovrus

Dovrus is a village in the Zangezur uezd of the former Yelizavetpol (Ganja) governorate, later in the former Gafan district, and currently in the Syunik province. The provincial centre lies 24 km to the northeast of the town of Gapan, at a height of 1,300 m above sea level. The settlement was integrated into the administrative area of Armenia following the establishment of the Zangezur uezd in Soviet Armenia on 31 August 1921. It was marked as “Dovruz” on the five-verst map of the Caucasus. The Armenian authors indicate the name of the village as “Tovruz” too.

The village was inhabited by 11 Azerbaijanis in 1831, 74 in 1873, 184 in 1886, 303 in 1897, 268 in 1904, 297 Azerbaijanis in 1914. In 1918 the inhabitants of the village were deported having been exposed to the genocide of Armenian armed units. They managed to return to their homes following the establishment of Soviet power in present-day Armenian territory. The village was inhabited by 88 Azerbaijanis in 1922, 144 in 1926 and 171 Azerbaijanis in 1931. In accordance with the decision of the USSR Cabinet of Ministers “On the resettlement of the collective farmers and other Azerbaijani population to the Kur-Araz lowland of the Azerbaijan SSR” dated 23 December 1947, two families (9 people) from the village were forced to deport to Azerbaijan in 1948. And in November 1988 the inhabitants of the village were deported from their historical-ethnic territories by the state of Armenia.

The toponym was coined on the basis of the ethnonym “Tavris” of the Turkic Khazar tribe. At present, the name of the settlement was indicated in Armenian as “Davrus” in official documents.

According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative area of the Syunik province.
