Dogguz

Dogguz is a village in the Iravan uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Gamarli (Artashat) district, and currently in the Ararat province. The provincial centre lies 49 km to the northeast of the town of Gamarli, by the Garni River, at a height of 2,070 m above sea level. It was mentioned as “Dogguz” in “The Iravan Province Review Book”, and as “Dokkuz” on the five-verst map of the Caucasus.

Historically, the village was solely inhabited by Azerbaijanis. In 1828–1829 Armenians were removed to the village from the Iranian provinces of Khoy and Salmas. Until 1828 there had been all in all 8 local Armenians in the village of Dogguz. Along with the Armenians, the village was inhabited by 127 Azerbaijanis in 1831, 159 in 1873, 178 in 1886 and 161 Azerbaijani in 1897. In February 1918 the Azerbaijanis were deported having been exposed to the genocide committed by Armenian armed units. The surviving inhabitants of the village managed to return to their homes following the establishment of Soviet power in the present-day Armenian territory. The village was inhabited by 75 Azerbaijanis in 1922, 78 in 1926 and 97 Azerbaijanis in 1931. According to the decision of the USSR Council of Ministers “On the resettlement of collective farmers and other Azerbaijani population from the Armenian SSR to the Kur-Araz lowland of the Azerbaijan SSR” dated 23 December 1947, the Azerbaijanis were removed from their historical- ethnic territories to Azerbaijan in 1948–1950. At present, Armenians live there.

The toponym was coined on the basis of the ethnonym “Dogguz” of the Oghuz Dulgadirli tribe. The village was renamed “Kanachut” by the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR dated 20 August 1945.

According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative area of the Ararat province.
