Diraklar

Diraklar is a village in the Alexandropol uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Duzkend (Akhuryan) district, and currently in the Shirak province. The provincial centre lies 10 km to the northeast of the town of Gumru, at a height of 1,570 m above sea level. It had been within the district of Gumru (Leninakan) until 1937. The village was mentioned as “Dirakli” in “The Iravan Province Review Book”, as “Diraklar” on the five-verst map.

The village had been inhabited only by Azerbaijanis until 1828. Armenians moved to the village from the Turkish provinces of Terjan and Kars in 1828–1830.

The toponym was coined on the basis of the name of the ancient Turkic tribe “Terekler” (Diraklar). The Terekler (Direkler) used to live in the 13th-14th centuries on the Anatolian peninsula.

The village was renamed “Karnut” by the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR dated 26 April 1946. According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative area of the Shirak province.
