Dian is a village in the Echmiadzin uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Talin district. The provincial centre lies 37 km to the northwest of the town of Ashtarak, at the southwestern foot of Mountain Alagoz and at a height of 1,700 m above sea level.
The village was solely inhabited by Azerbaijanis: 32 in 1831, 216 in 1873, 242 in 1886, 304 in 1897, 272 in 1904, 290 in 1914 and 380 Azerbaijanis in 1916. Following the massacres committed by the Armenian armed groups in 1918, the surviving inhabitants of the village had to move to Türkiye. The Armenians removed from the Turkish provinces of Taron and Mush were settled in the village where only Armenians live at present.
The toponym “Dian” was formed on the basis of the dynasty called “Diau”.
According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative area of the Aragatsotn province.
