Dashli

Dashli is a village in the Iravan uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Vedi (Ararat) district, and currently in the Ararat province. The provincial centre lies 19 km to the southeast of the town of Gamarli (Artashat), by the Vedi River, at a height of 970 m above sea level. It was marked in “The Iravan Province Review Book” and on the five-verst map of the Caucasus. In “The Iravan Province Review Book” the name of the village was included in the list of settlements within the areas of Garni (Karni) and Vedi.

The village was solely inhabited by Azerbaijanis: 84 in 1831, 147 in 1873, 135 in 1886, 184 in 1897, 238 in 1904, 261 in 1914 and 171 Azerbaijanis in 1916. In 1918 Azerbaijanis were driven out by Armenian armed units, and Armenians were removed from abroad to be settled in the village. A part of the Azerbaijanis managed to return to their homes after the establishment of Soviet power in the present-day Armenian territory. Along with the Armenians, the village was also inhabited by 93 Azerbaijanis in 1922, 95 in 1926, 117 Azerbaijanis in 1931. According to the decision of the USSR Council of Ministers “On the resettlement of collective farmers and other Azerbaijani population from the Armenian SSR to the Kur-Araz lowland of the Azerbaijan SSR” dated 23 December 1947, the Azerbaijani inhabitants were removed to Azerbaijan from their historical-ethnic territories. At present, only Armenians live there.

The toponym was coined by adding the suffix “-lı” denoting plurality to the word “dash” used in Azerbaijani.

The village was renamed “Dashtakar” by the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR dated 3 July 1968. According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative area of the Ararat province.
